V. The Current __________

Romans 16:17-18

A. Salvation by works – Matthew 19:16-22

Weirsbe’s Outlines of the New Testament: Christ told him to keep the Law, not because the Law saves, but because we must be convicted by the Law before we feel the need to be saved by grace. This young man knew the Law, and the Law had served as a schoolmaster to bring him to Christ (Gal. 3:24). Now the Law was serving as a mirror (James 1:22–25) to show the young man his real need. If he really tried to obey God’s Law, the man would discover how sinful he was!

B. Gospel of the Kingdom – Matthew 24:13-14

Matthew Henry’s Whole Bible Commentary:

It is comfortable to those who do thus endure to the end, and suffer for their constancy, that they shall be saved. Perseverance wins the crown, through free grace, and shall wear it. They shall be saved: perhaps they may be delivered out of their troubles, and comfortably survive them in this world; but it is eternal salvation that is here intended. They that endure to the end of their days, shall then receive the end of their faith and hope, even the salvation of their souls, 1 Pt. 1:9; Rom. 2:7; Rev. 3:20. The crown of glory will make amends for all; and a believing regard to that will enable us to choose rather to die at a stake with the persecuted, than to live in a palace with the persecutors.

C. Baptismal Regeneration – Acts 2:38

J. Vernon McGee, Through the Bible:

Peter says to them, “Repent, and be baptized.” Water baptism would be the evidence that they had repented, that they had come to Christ and had put their trust in Him. Peter says to them, “Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Rather than bringing a sacrifice to be offered in the temple, this will be an evidence that you have trusted Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (2:37- 38). Their baptism would be a testimony to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. What a gift! And that’s not all. Anyone who believes, who puts his trust in Jesus Christ, will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The crowd was overwhelmed with joy and believed what Peter said, and more than three thousand people responded in faith. These were genuinely born again believers.

D. Losing your Salvation – Hebrews 6:4-6

The Bible Knowledge Commentary (Dallas Theological Seminary):

This passage has been interpreted in four ways: (1) that the danger of a Christian losing his salvation is described, a view rejected because of biblical assurances that salvation is a work of God which cannot be reversed; (2) that the warning is against mere profession of faith short of salvation, or tasting but not really partaking of salvation (The New Scofield Reference Bible, p. 1315); (3) that hypothetically if a Christian could lose his salvation, there is no provision for repentance (The Ryrie Study Bible, p. 1736); (4) that a warning is given of the danger of a Christian moving from a position of true faith and life to the extent of becoming disqualified for further service (1 Cor. 9:27) and for inheriting millennial glory. The latter is the interpretation adopted here.
